Four pilgrims, three large cases

Business-class sedans for pilgrim transfers in Saudi Arabia

Three full-size saloons for pilgrims who want a quieter, larger car than the economy class without moving up to a van. The luggage figure is the same; the car is not.

This class is not about carrying more

Worth being plain about it: three large cases is what the Corolla in our economy class takes as well. What changes here is the car around them. The Lexus ES is 4,975 mm long against the Corolla's 4,630, and the cabin, the ride and the quiet at motorway speed are the reason to book it for a long Makkah or Madinah leg.

Where the published figures run out

Lexus publishes 454 litres for the ES boot, the same across the ES 250, ES 300h and ES 350. Ford publishes engine and seating data for the Taurus in this market but not its boot volume, and Toyota publishes no luggage figure for the Avalon in the Gulf. Where a manufacturer figure does not exist we carry our own operated one and say so rather than borrowing a number from another market.

Which of the three to ask for

All three seat four pilgrims and take three large cases, so the choice is about the drive rather than the load. The ES 350 carries a 3.5-litre V6 at 300 hp and the ES 300h a hybrid; the Taurus is offered with a 2.0-litre EcoBoost at 239 hp or a 1.5-litre hybrid. Any of them is a comfortable Jeddah to Makkah run.
